Gaining new perspectives – summary of the ecommerce forum 2020 in Athens

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALast week I had the chance to participate in the first big greek ecommerce conference: the ecommerce forum 2020. I had the chance to spread the word about the development of mobile devices and their impact on the shopping sphere to greek merchants, big and small. Since Roman just recently ranted heavily about conferences, I was curious how the two days of this first timer would be.

Where the German conference scene has a handful of good and innovative conferences and also loads of just time wasting events. But the host of the conference Efstathios Intzeidis did a great job! The mixture of the program was wide spread, from experience telling Greek shops, over German mobile solutions and merchant networks to Austrian mass customization. Blended with Q&A sessions and panels, the whole flow of the conference was really nice and time flew by. And I must admit that the theatre (it literally was a theatre!) was a great place to speak and listen – theatre seats are a real comfort if you are in a conference all day!

I was amazed by the mixture of people joining in and visiting the conference. It was an experience of it’s own to come to a more ore less ignored ecommerce market with it’s own problems and challenges. Apart from having good conversations with other speakers the exchange with the – mostly greek – merchants and companies was just great. I got some new perspectives to the world and ideas of ecommerce. For example for greek companies the logistics part is a huge problem in going cross border, but also in land. If you know Athen’s traffic hours you know why. So the quite isolated Greek market is forced to be innovative to solve these challenges. So you should keep a close look, there may be things coming up worth knowing.

Overall I must say the trip was worth it (in contrast to other conferences I visited in 2013…). Besides the fact that Athens really is worth visiting you should keep a close look on the conference dates for 2014 to meet interesting actors in an interesting market to gain new perspectives. Or as Henry Miller said “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.”
